I love being a geeky mommy and figuring out what that means for me with Harley. It’s a daily journey as I try to learn how to be a mommy, and a geeky mommy at that. However, there are some awesome ladies who are further along on the path and have some really cool ideas that I’m totally going to steal. Welcome to the Geeky Mommy Files, where every Friday, I will be introducing you to one.

I first saw Pippa when she was a presenter on The Verge. That was before I was in the industry, and I remember being so happy seeing a cool woman presenting about games. When I actually met her at my first gaming events, I learned she was just as rad and nice in person. Plus, she is raising two gorgeous boys. A beautiful, geeky family? Yup, got some ideas to steal from her!

Nothing is worse than a sick baby

I have been very lucky so far. Sure, Harley was born too early and had to be in the NICU for weeks, but she wasn’t sick in there. She was just small and needed to grow before she could come home. Once she came home, she was healthy if not always happy, and she has been doing better and better every day. Until yesterday.

Yesterday was time for visit to the clinic. She was weighed (4.9kgs!) and got her shots. Last time the sister warned me that some babies don’t feel well after their immunizations – they get a fever and feel poorly. I bought a thermometer and Panado just in case, but she was totally fine last time. This time? Not so much.

Why you want to win this Kid Got Style giveaway

I was incredibly happy when I found out that I was having a little girl. I would have been just as happy to have a little boy. But once I knew Harley was coming, I worried about how I’d raise her to be a strong woman, not bogged down with gender stereotypes. One of the things I wanted to avoid was dressing her in pink. I don’t like pink myself, and I hate that girls are expected to wear it. I wanted Harley to wear awesomely funky clothes, things that I think she’d look back on and think were cool.

When I first started looking for such funky clothes, I really struggled. Everything seemed so cliched – such typical baby clothes all in pastels. I wanted unique designs that were still made on high quality clothes. So when I found Kid Got Style, I fell in love. My wallet begs for mercy every time I visit the site because I simply find far too many things that I can’t live without. Bibs and onesies – the site has become my go-to place for baby shower gifts, and of course I have to buy some things for Harley when I shop as well. On balancing work and mothering two weeks later

I have been back at work for two weeks today. It has not been easy. I don’t think I quite appreciated how much work it would be to try and function as a normal working person while also mothering a tiny human. The fact that I get to do it from home without putting on heels only makes life slightly better. While I still have a lot to learn, things have gotten easier.

The past two weeks have already taught me a lot. I’ve learned about how I’m able to work, what kind of mom I want to be, and I have some more ideas about my life as a Work at Home Mom. I also have come to appreciate just how good a baby I have – of course Harley has her moments, but for the most part she’s a very chilled baby. So, here’s what I’ve figured out thus far. On leaving my baby with a sitter

Since Harley has come home from the hospital, she has always been with me and/or Dean. And, to be realistic, the hours we have spent apart could probably be counted on one hand. I’ve occasionally popped to the stores and left her at home with her dad, but mostly I take her with me. When I’ve had meetings for work, she’s come along, too, and everyone has been wonderfully supportive of my little sidekick.

However, I have been invited to a really cool event for work, and I won’t be able to take her with me. It’s the first time I’m thinking of going somewhere with my husband and leaving the little munchkin behind. I know I have to do it eventually, but is she ready for it… and am I? Continue Reading
