4-Hour Workweek Review – Half a Good Book

4-Hour Workweek Review - Half a Good Book

I recently listened to the audiobook for the 4-Hour Workweek. It started off so strong, so interesting, I really enjoyed it. By the time I got to the end, I was rather less impressed, but I thought I’d share some of the good and bad.

I don’t normally call my collection of opinions a review, but I decided to go for it. I mean, it might not be a comprehensive, highly critical review the likes of which I’d give in my old job as a games journalist, but I’m sure it will help you know if it’s worthwhile for you.

(Full disclosure: I listened to the book for free with Libby. Also, I include some affiliate links below. If you click on them, I might be paid when you make a purchase. This in no way changes the content of what I write.) Continue Reading

Prescription-free skin care for Psoriasis

Prescription-free skin care for Psoriasis

Some of you might not know this about me, but I’ve struggled with psoriasis for pretty much my whole life. It was a big part of my body and self-image issues as a teenager, and can still be really frustrating. But I’ve learned a lot from leading dermatologists and other doctors’ advice, plus from just living with this for years and figuring out what works.

First up, a big disclaimer. I’m not a doctor or dermatologist, nor do I have any medical training (except I think I did a first aid workshop a while back). I have “just” lived with psoriasis for my whole life and have learned some tricks to keep it under control. I haven’t used any prescription products in years, not because my skin is always clear, but just because travel and new doctors means it’s not always easy. Here are some easy ways to manage your psoriasis or other dry skin conditions if you can’t or won’t use something available only with a doctor’s scrawl.

Why Libby is my new must-have app

Why Libby is my new must-have app

(Disclaimer: Yes, there are affiliate links below. This means that I might make some cash if you click on them and buy stuff. But the words would have been the same otherwise.)

I’ve written before about how I’m a bookworm. While I’m not nearly as much of a prolific reader as I used to be, I still love to read and try to do it as much as I can.

Many years ago, I switched to reading primarily on a Kindle, and then to the Kindle App on my iPad. Yes, I still love the smell of a new book in hard copy, and it’s impossible to get an author to sign an ebook. But with moving around so much, and being tired of traveling with numerous books in my bags, ebooks are ideal. Continue Reading

What I learned in three years of blogging – Blogging essentials

What I learned in three years of blogging - Blogging essentials

(Photo credit: Lauren Iwen with Lauren Iwen Photography // @LaurenIwen)

Today is my three year blogging anniversary. That’s right, three years ago I wrote this little post proclaiming that I had a bun in the oven. Three years, I decided that this would be my little place on the internet and that I would share my journey with all of you. And what a journey it has been.

Last year, I shared what I had learned in two years of blogging, so I figured I’d continue the tradition and share what I’ve learned in three years of blogging. I’m in no way claiming to have all the answers, but this is where I am so far and what I consider to be blogging essentials. Continue Reading

How I’m using social media to build real friendships

How I'm using social media to build real friendships

I’ve talked before about how moving is hard and making friends takes time. Whether you’ve lived somewhere for a long time or you’re new in an area, forging new social connections can be scary, complicated and totally daunting. I know a lot of you appreciated my advice on how to grow meaningful connections, so I thought I’d share a little about how I’m using social media to build real friendships. Like, actual burgeoning connections and stuff.

To be honest, before we left for the States, I wasn’t the biggest fan of Facebook. It was just so cluttered with crap, and most of my day to day friends weren’t on there much. I preferred twitter, and I still do, for news, silly interactions and fun quips. I was trying to get into Instagram, and it’s still something I’m trying to do more of, but it just feels like a serious time sink for me. It feels like you have to be on Instagram ALL THE TIME to actually see anything worthwhile. But my social media game changed a lot by moving. Continue Reading
