Everyone needs a robot vacuum – An Ecovacs Deebot review

An Ecovacs Deebot review

I’ve told you before about how I’ve changed the way I see time. Every moment that I have is valuable, even if I choose to use it to binge on Netflix series or relax outside with my husband drinking a glass of wine. Thanks to working per hour as a freelance writer, I am much more aware of how valuable my time is, and I appreciate time-saving hacks or tech. Which is why I wanted to share my Ecovacs Deebot review and why I think that everyone needs a robot vacuum.

In the interest of full disclosure, yes, I will be using affiliate links in this post in the hopes that you click on them and buy yourself a robot vacuum. I bought this one with my own money, and I’m not being paid by anyone to write this review, so it’s all totally honest. But I like this thing far too much, I think you will too, and I’d like to earn some extra cash if my words help you decide that this is the vacuum for you. Continue Reading

Baby led weaning follow up: What my two-year-old eats

What my two-year-old eats

As parents, I feel like we have so much to worry about. How to get a kid to sleep, or nurse, or eat, or learn, or talk, or potty trained. And there are so many techniques, so much advice out there. But in the moment, it’s hard to know which version will be best for your kid, which is why I thought I’d do this baby led weaning follow up and share what my two-year-old eats.

I’ve written on the topic a bunch, and if you want to go back and read my rant about people pushing me to give her solid foods before it was time, you can do that over here. I also wrote about a force-feeding incident, why baby-led weaning is good for development, and even that awesome moment when Harley finally seemed to find her appetite. You are welcome to read those words, but don’t worry, we’ll start from the beginning and then get to the update part. Continue Reading

Things I wish I knew before we emigrated

Things I wish I knew before we emigrated from South Africa to the USA

I am finally in a really good place. I mean that literally and figuratively, it seems. After some rough months, I’ve been feeling more and more settled. I didn’t realize just how settled I was until Dean’s parents came to visit and I was able to confidently show them around… and even feel disrupted by sharing space (in the best possible way). That’s gotta be proof that we had a routine and were used to our space if I actually felt like things were different from normal, right? I mean, just to have a “normal” is awesome after having emigrated and changed our whole lives.

I am happy and things are going well. It still isn’t even a year since we moved, so I figure we’re on a good trajectory. I’m sure there will be hard days again, and even better days, but for now, I’m pleased with how things are going. We still need to meet people and make friends, but that always takes time. It will come. There are some things I wish I knew before we emigrated, though. Continue Reading

PaMu earbuds combine form and function

PaMu earbuds

I would like to think that I’m an audiophile, but the reality is that I’m really not. I didn’t care when I heard the news that Apple was removing the headphone jack from their phones. I don’t listen to music while I work. I have a fabulous SteelSeries headset that I use at my PC, and a great pair of Sony headphones to use when I’m traveling, and I figured I was sorted. But then these PaMu earbuds came into my life, and I’m better for them.

I’ve reviewed all kinds of headsets and devices before over on Critical Hit, but I wasn’t really sure how I’d feel about the PaMu earbuds. Still, they promised that they’d provide excellent sound, and even more importantly, never fall out no matter what I did. I’d long since given up on finding a headset or earbuds I could take with me to the gym, so maybe this was finally the answer. What did I have to lose? Continue Reading

6 Skills Your Child Learns from Reading That Aren’t Literacy

6 Skills Your Child Learns from Reading That Aren't Literacy

I often write about how important reading is to me, and as a part of how I’m raising Harley. All the studies say that babies, toddlers and kids who are read to for at least 20 minutes a day perform better in school. But this goes beyond test scores and even beyond teaching a kid to read, because there are many things our kids learn – skills from reading that aren’t literacy.

This might seem a bit counterintuitive. I mean, the whole point of reading to kids is to teach them to read and get them literate, right? Well, not exactly. There’s a whole lot more that goes into it, like having a healthy bedtime routine. But there are also specific skills that kids use for the rest of their lives that can start with simply reading together. Continue Reading
